The naming of Avalon Beach 100 years ago (in 1921)

Arthur Jabez Small, a property developer, town planner and real estate agent, named Avalon Beach in 1921. The brochure below shows a five pounds deposit could secure you a block. “The word Avalon means an earthly paradise“, claims the brochure.

It states: “As a model seaside resort Avalon Beach possesses unsurpassed natural advantages with great prospective increase in values in the future. About 14 miles from Manly on the Barrenjoey Peninsular the district offers unique opportunities for surfing, swimming, fishing, sailing, boating, beautiful walks, drives & scenery.

“The central estate is on the main road between harbour & ocean (Avalon Parade) & within easy reach of both. The land is level, lots are large and the terms are easy.

“Avalon Beach swimming pool is famous & affords perfect security for bathers.”
